NEWLY RELEASED APRIL 2020
Poco Latino-Andy Firth. 2020 Digital Release. A Corona virus “Locked-down” Project
As the 2020 dreaded corona virus epidemic sweeps (or swept) through the entire globe and social distancing becomes (became) a normal part of everybody’s lives, musicians in particular feel (felt) this more than most artists. The social distancing and lock-down for them means, (meant), no practical way to create new recordings together in a studio or on stage. Fortunately, due to the clever acoustic sampling technology available today, Andy has been able to create an entire album using just his clarinet, a keyboard with sampling software and a few percussion instruments that he keeps in his studio.
“Poco Latino” (meaning, “a little Latin”) is a “one man” project in every sense of the meaning of this term as Andy arranged, recorded, performed, mixed and post produced the entire album, but before this however, there had been numerous attempts to make this album using Andy’s guitar playing friends for the guitar part. However, all felt that the unique approach to the Latin styled guitar performances that Andy came up with, simply by using chord progression to create the guitar tracks, meant that their contributions would not be able to create the appropriate feel needed for this project. So, given the restrictions of social distancing, Andy decided to “create” the best quality sampled acoustic guitar performances he could using the software available to him and the results many agree are stunningly realistic and even went as far as using a real guitar to simulate the movement of fingers and hand sounds to give the sample sound even more realism. The bass is likewise an excellent sampled sound, played on keyboard but the percussion (bongos, claves, chimes and shakers) is performed by real instruments (not sampled) also performed by Andy at real time.
The songs are treasured favourites, the arrangements fresh and creative, the clarinet playing mellifluous, mellow and as smooth as melted butter, lightly seasoned with with a tinge of warm reverb for depth. The result is a fresh, relaxing album of 20 tracks that are filled with all the joys of a warm summer’s day.
