This piece was inspired by the final words my father spoke to me in our last telephone conversation, the day before he passed away in August 2020. We all knew his time with us was limited, and because I was unable to fly to Adelaide during the COVID lock-down, I had to make the hardest call of my life — the one to say goodbye.
Our conversation was brief but beautiful, and his parting words stayed with me. About a week after his passing, they became the inspiration for this song.
Although the work was performed soon afterward as part of a concert, this is its first published arrangement. I aimed to capture the feeling of a live performance: while the solo line has an improvised character, it is fully notated and accessible to an intermediate-level player, allowing performers to focus on expression and storytelling.
