About Adagio & Allegro Op.450
This work begins with a slow, plaintive somewhat melancholy theme played by the clarinet. The theme is then picked up by the violin until the clarinet enters with the next main theme. This theme, although still tinged with a slight sadness, is a little brighter and more flourished. The theme winds down as if to finish the work but then suddenly breaks forth into a lively fugal section that is full of life, hope and optimism. Then just as quickly as it burst forth, this section winds down to a slower, more reflective but pensive section that features all of the individual players briefly before returning briefly to the original slow first theme. However, this section gradually increases in tempo a launches itself into the lively and energetic fugal section before leading to the slower first theme once more. The piece dwindles down to the final embers of it’s last moments, and thus bring the work to its end.
The Inspiration for the Work
The imagery for this work was inspired by painting and TV shows about 17th and 18th Century sailing ships and the thrilling but treacherous adventures as well as tragedies that these ships and their crews experienced. The work was first sketched in 2010 and then re-discovered and completed in December 2025.
This product comes with conductor’s score, clarinet in Bb, violin, viola and cello parts as well as mp3 performance and backing tracks.
