Travellin’ Light-Alto Sax
Travellin’ Light was composed around 1997 during my time as a music tutor at Sydney Grammar School. The saxophone teaching room contained a piano, and whenever a student was absent, I would sit at the keyboard and compose. This piece was created during one of those unexpected windows of quiet creativity.
Originally intended for a collection titled Firth Time, the work took a different path when I was invited by Boosey & Hawkes in London to create a two-book series of graded repertoire for clarinet and saxophone students. Published in 2003 as Play Clarinet with Andy Firth (Books 1 & 2) and Play Saxophone with Andy Firth (Books 1 & 2), the series became widely used by students around the world. Due to space limitations, however, several submitted works were omitted — Travellin’ Light among them.
Despite its exclusion from those volumes, the piece has remained a favourite in my private studio, frequently chosen for higher-level examinations and school assessments. After recently rediscovering the manuscript on an old hard drive, I have re-engraved and re-scored the work using Dorico, and this publication marks its first official release.
I dedicate Travellin’ Light to my dear friend, American maestro and woodwind master Victor Morosco, whose encouragement over many years has inspired me to push beyond my comfort zone in both composition and improvisation.
This product comes with soloist part, piano accompaniment (with chord changes), mp3 performances and backing tracks.
