Concerto for Clarinet in Eb Major Op.501
This work is designed for intermediate-level players who want to play a concerto that isn’t too technically challenging, but that still sounds like a concerto from the 18th-century repertoire.
This concerto began as a single-movement work for intermediate-level student clarinet players entitled “The Kid’s Concerto” in May 2001. In May of 2004, a demo recording was made of this version, and shortly thereafter, two more movements were added: the 2nd movement (adagio ma non troppo) and the 3rd, Allegro vivace.
After several revisions to the work, the final version was produced in 2014 and published in 2015. After 10 years of teaching the work to students a few edits and changes have been added to create this version of the work. (December 2025).
The concerto was composed with intermediate-level clarinet players in mind so that it is quite easily playable yet still presents the player with a sense of challenge and effort when performed well. The style of the work is similar to 18th-century Western Classical music traditions of composers such as Carl Stamitz, Carl Maria Von Weber and Bernhard Henrich Crussell.
The range of the work has been confined to E1 to F4 to suit the chosen level previously mentioned.
-Movement 1: Adagio/Allegro con spiritoso: 6:40
-Movement 2: Adagio ma non troppo: 3:40
-Movement 3: Allegro vivace: 5:30
Range: E1 to F4
Technical aspects: Semi-quaver scale and arpeggio-based passages of moderate difficulty.
