About Play Dixieland with Andy Firth
Dixieland Jazz Music is one of the most challenging forms of jazz ensemble music to perform. Skillful, well-crafted Dixieland music requires that the players, in
particular, the front row players of trumpet, clarinet, trombone (and sometimes tenor sax) are well versed in both the harmonic and stylistic elements of the music.
These front line players will be required to play a combination of melodic, bass, improvisatory and counter melodic functions and usually, without any prior
rehearsal of this material, as it is almost always improvised. In fact it would be fair to say that the demands of Dixieland music can, and often does, require the same
level of technical skills as say be bop, modern jazz and other small group forms of jazz music performance.
About this Book
The premise of this book was to give the novice player an experience of performing Dixieland music without the demands of the improvisatory and high
level technical skills that are normally expected. The best way to do this was to use two scored clarinets so that both melody, countermelody and jazz “soloing” could be used to re-create the feel of Dixieland jazz music performance.
The Backing Tracks
The backing tracks can be used to provide support for just one soloist or for a clarinet duo as required. The tracks titled as “2nd Clarinet” should be used if being performed by one solo clarinetist as it contains the 2nd clarinet part as well as the rhythm section. However, if being performed by a clarinet duo then the tracks titled as “Backing Track” should be used as they do not contain the 2nd clarinet part. It should also be noted that the 1st clarinet part will occasionally be marked with “Don’t play if using the play-along track with Andy on 2nd clarinet”. This ensures that when performing the pieces as a duet that the 1st clarinet doesn’t play over the 2nd clarinet’s part. However, these parts will need to be played if
performing the pieces as a clarinet soloist with just the “Backing Track”, and not with the “2nd clarinet” backing tracks. Backing tracks feature piano, banjo/guitar, bass and drums.
This product comes with soloist parts, mp3 performance and backing tracks, (backings without clarinet 2 part and with clarinet 2 part)
