Shaw Thing! is a tribute to the music and distinctive clarinet style of legendary bandleader and virtuoso Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky). One of the finest clarinetists of the Swing Era, Shaw left behind a remarkable discography filled with enduring hit recordings and performances that helped define big band jazz at its height.
This piece weaves subtle references to two of Shaw’s most celebrated recordings — Begin the Beguine by Cole Porter and Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II — incorporating elements of their melodic and stylistic character into its musical fabric to evoke Shaw’s elegant tone, fluid phrasing, and rhythmic vitality.
